About Rats

Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents of the superfamily Muroidea. "True rats" are members of the genus Rattus, the most important of which to humans are the black rat, and the brown rat. Many members of other rodent species and families are also referred to as rats, and share many characteristics with true rats. Rats are typically distinguished from mice by their size. Generally, when someone discovers a large muroid rodent, its common name includes the term rat, while if it is smaller, the name includes the term mouse.

Black Rat

  • The black rat is between 16–24cm in length, with a tail longer than the head and body.
  • It grows to between 150–200g in weight.
  • They have a pointed nose, large ears and a slender body when compared to the Brown Rat.
  • Yellowish fur on the flanks and white on the belly.
  • There is usually a small streak of yellow on the chest.

Brown Rat

  • The brown rat is up to 40 cm in length, with a tail shorter than the head and body.
  • It grows up to between 350–500g in weight.
  • It has a blunt nose, small ears and a thicker body when compared to the Black Rat (Rattus rattus).

Rat Life Cycle

Rats produce 5–10 young per litter, and have between 3–6 litters a year. The gestation period is about 3 weeks. It only takes between 12–16 weeks from birth for them to reach sexual maturity.

Rat Treatment

Rats are known for feeding often in small quantities at a time, for this reason it recommended to put down plenty of anticoagulant food baits located inside bait stations which should ensure your mouse problem is solved quickly and efficiently in around 2-3 visits. We can even proof weak spots in or around your property which is recommended to prevent future infestations.
